Sunday Bridges - Aerial Lift Bridge
A few years ago when my husband suggested we make a stop in Duluth, Minnesota, I thought, "Seriously?" But it turns out that it is a beautiful city with lots of things to do right on the lake. The lake being one of the GREAT LAKES, as in Lake Superior. We took a ride on a tour boat and I snapped a picture of the Aerial Lift bridge (built in 1905) when it was down,
and when it was up to allow this big freighter to pass through.
Just to give you an idea exactly how large these ships are, here's a close up of one that we watched pass by in the canal.
Duluth is the world's largest inland port, shipping coal, iron ore and grain.

Duluth is one of our favorite summer day trips from St. Paul, Mn. I posted the same bridge today. Next week I'll be posting several photos of the Three Tall Ships that were in the harbor and Lake Superior last week-end. Come back and visit my blog and the area.
The ships going thru the canal are always viewed by tourists and residents alike; you captured the scene quite well.

Good one, Pat! Not everyday you see an "elevator" bridge... LOL! I've been to Minnesota at least two dozen times, but never to Duluth.

That is impressive! We have one here in Portland, Maine, that opens up; it doesn't go up and down like that one.

I don't believe I have ever seen an aerial lift bridge. That is amazing that something strong enough to hold a LOT of vehicles is also able to be raised 'easily'.
I like your cattle. Are they in the field near your campground? I like the grass seed on their backs. Grandpa's cows used to pull and 'flip' their hay into their mouths and had the same thing happen.

Cool bridge. I don't know how many of the lift bridges there are, but I suspect they are more scarce than other types of bridges built to move to let boat traffic pass.
There is a lift bridge like the one in your picture (but MUCH smaller) in Booneville, MO by the Capri Casino. It is quite old and very cool to look at!
